EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR EMERGENCY GENERAL SURGERY IN JAPAN

Emergency general surgery (EGS) remains a field with limited evidence and a lack of standardized clinical guidelines. There is a desire for consistent, evidence-based care through the establishment of standardized diagnostic methods, surgical indications, and postoperative management in Japan. Against this backdrop, the Emergency Surgery Course, jointly developed by the European Society for Trauma & Emergency Surgery and the American Association for Surgery of Trauma, was held domestically. This course is a surgical education program targeting conditions requiring emergency surgery beyond trauma, such as acute abdomen. It goes beyond merely surgical techniques, focusing on case presentations that address decision-making challenges frequently encountered in EGS clinical practice. These include diagnosis, choice of surgical approach, and early recognition of complications. A key feature is the acquisition of practical, clinically applicable knowledge through discussions of these cases. The first Japanese-language course held in 2022 received exceptionally high ratings in surveys from Japanese surgeons. Holding this course domestically will likely promote the widespread adoption of standardized EGS training.
