MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY IN EMERGENCY GENERAL SURGERY: CURRENT STATUS AND THE POTENTIAL ROLE OF ROBOTIC SURGERY

Acute care surgery (ACS) is a clinical discipline consisting of trauma surgery, emergency general surgery (EGS), and surgical critical care. Even in general surgical practices that do not specialize in ACS, EGS is an important area and accounts for a significant proportion of surgical cases. In recent years, with the widespread adoption of minimally invasive surgery and advances in surgical technology, laparoscopic procedures have become the standard operation for many emergency conditions in EGS, including acute cholecystitis, appendicitis, gastrointestinal perforation, and bowel obstruction, particularly in hemodynamically stable patients. In contrast, the introduction of robotic surgical systems into the field of EGS has not progressed. This article reviews the role of minimally invasive surgery in the main diseases of EGS based on national and international guidelines and discusses the possibilities and challenges of introducing robotic surgery.
