THE PERSPECTIVE OF PEDIATRIC SURGERY ON GASTROENTEROLOGICAL SURGERY
The specialty of gastroenterological surgery is centered around “organs,” whereas that of pediatric surgery focuses not on specific organs but on “pediatric patients.” This means that pediatric surgery must address a wide range of ages, body sizes, and disease backgrounds, with surgical targets that encompass a variety of organs. This requires specialized knowledge and clinical experience across diverse age-groups and a broad spectrum of diseases. However, the declining birthrate has undeniably reduced opportunities for pediatric surgical training. In light of this situation, our department frequently conducts joint surgeries involving both pediatric surgeons and gastroenterological surgeons. Additionally, we are actively introducing minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as endoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, and various navigation technologies, which have been honed in adult surgery. Given the limited resources in pediatric surgery, we propose exploring innovative solutions not only in clinical practice but also in research and education within the broader context of surgical departments, including pediatric surgery.
