The history of the research on intestinal microbiota started about 100 years ago and now the features of the intestinal microbiota have been clarified using culture methods and whole genomic analysis of intestinal bacteria. We have administered our synbiotic therapy to pediatric patients with intestinal failure for the past two decades and noted that the control of intestinal microbiota is very important to prevent severe infection and to achieve satisfactory nutritional status. In the future, we must develop more effective probiotics, for example, fecal microbiota transplantation or selective microbiota transplantation, involving the use of 10 to 20 promising bacteria as probiotics in patients with intestinal failure.
