CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS OF THE TREATMENT OF NEONATAL NECROTIZING ENTEROCOLITIS

Pediatric Surgery, Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, Suita, Japan

Yuko Tazuke

Recently, the survival rate of premature infants has improved markedly, but the mortality rate of those with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is still high, at more than 30% in a Japanese survey. Japanese guidelines were published in 2016 to improve the NEC mortality rate following Minds criteria. The evidence shows that the prenatal maternal administration of steroids, breast-feeding, and probiotic use are factors that improve the prognosis of NEC. Numerous basic research studies have attempted to determine the mechanism of the development of NEC. Those advanced findings will improve the survival rates of neonates with NEC in the future.
