EMERGENCY GENERAL SURGERY: CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

Department of Surgery, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA

Research studies over the last decades showed a significant global burden related to emergency general surgery (EGS) conditions. In Japan, as the population ages rapidly, a multidisciplinary team including surgeons should be developed for the management of EGS patients, especially those requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Given the lack of nationwide data, further research is warranted for a better understanding of the current status of EGS practice in Japan.
