THE PERSPECTIVE OF PEDIATRIC SURGERY ON THE IDEAL APPROACH TO SURGICAL CARE FOR CHILDREN

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, Nagoya, Japan

Hiroo Uchida

Pediatric surgery requires a distinct approach based on the developmental characteristics of children, differing significantly from adult surgical care. The unique anatomic and physiological traits, along with the diversity and rarity of pediatric diseases, demand advanced expertise. Recent advances in medical technology have highlighted the importance of enhancing minimally invasive surgery and robot-assisted surgical techniques. To address challenges such as the decrease in case numbers and its impact on skill development among young surgeons, simulation-based training and regional collaboration for case centralization are essential. Additionally, comprehensive care involving patient-centered treatment, family support, multidisciplinary teamwork, and long-term follow-up is crucial. While the decline in birthrates poses a challenge by reducing case numbers, it also presents an opportunity to provide more precise and holistic treatment for each case. The future development of pediatric surgery requires maintaining specialized skills, efficient allocation of medical resources, strengthening social support, and utilizing telemedicine.
