Since October 2022, the Public Relations Committee in the Japanese Society of Surgery has been making preparations for its official social media account. Currently, we plan to launch the official account by the end of 2023. Social media are widely and effectively used for academic information collection and dissemination, especially in Western countries, but only a few academic organizations in Japan have successfully operated social media sites. It is considered that social media have the potential to be used effectively for various purposes, such as sharing information with society members, educating and recruiting young surgeons, and attracting visitors to scientific meetings and seminars. On the other hand, social media also have their own risks, such as “flame wars,” and so they must be used with great care and with an understanding of their characteristics.
