The Japanese Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is conducting medical awareness activities using X and YouTube. As of August 2023, its X account had 20,000 followers, and the YouTube channel had 4,200 subscribers. The majority of the content is for general medical awareness. The main purpose is to deliver accurate medical information about otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery to nonmedical professionals and to raise awareness of the field. X has a survey function that is used to investigate disease awareness. In addition, YouTube creates videos for the general public to coincide with Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Month. The creators are given guidelines and eight principles for video creation and asked to follow them. Providing accurate information on social media by medical societies can help nonmedical professionals find accurate information more easily and promote medical information that nonmedical professionals should rely on as recommended by experts. When medical societies conduct awareness activities using social media, the purpose and target audience are important. Social media are a means of awareness, not a purpose, and considering the purpose of awareness activities using social media is the first step. It is hoped that more medical societies will become interested in medical awareness activities.
