ETHICS IN ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION

Department of Surgery, National Hospital Organization, Yonago Medical Center, Yonago, Japan

Atsushi Sugitani

Organ donation rates in Japan have been stagnant in spite of the enforcement of the revised Organ Transplantation Law in 2010. This situation is strongly influenced by the mistrust in medical services which occurred with the first cardiac transplantation performed in 1968 and by the Japanese view of life and death. Along with the improvement of the transplantation system, it is necessary for transplant surgeons to learn about ethics from many viewpoints as well as to enrich their knowledge and improve their skills.
