Some ethical violations occur in the field of surgery and incur severe punishments. Professionalism and improvement of ethical awareness in surgery are required to ensure social trust in medicine. As part of the systematic operations of a hospital Ethics Committee, clinical ethics consultations must be held to cope with any ethical problems detected. The identification of ethical problems is insufficient, and such problems must be dealt with appropriately for improved in-hospital ethical education. Respect for the human rights of patients is a central idea in medical ethics, and the concept of informed consent is the basis of clinical medicine. Medical professionals should not take paternalistic attitudes when requesting informed consent from patients, while remembering that a simple proposal of a choice of treatments can place a burden on patients. Patients can be aided in a shared decision-making process by many types of specialists. Participation in workshops is recommended to improve the communicative competence between physicians and patients.
