Effects of antiplatelet, anticoagulant and immunosuppressive drugs on patency of small-sized Gore-Tex were investigated in dogs. One hundred dogs were divided into seven groups according to drug used and method of administration.
The patency rate was 71 percent in the group where antiplatelet drug was given preoperatively and postoperatively, while it was 64 percent in the group where both antiplatelet and anticoagulant were given in the same way. Four days were considered adequate for preoperative treatment.
The rapid migration of fibroblasts through the micropores of this graft and decreased intimal hyperplasia were demonstrated in these preoperative groups.
It was concluded that preoperative treatment by antiplatelet drugs produces a significantly high patency rate on a small-sized Gore-Tex (3 mm in diameter,) not only in an early stage but also in a late one.
