In an attempt to evaluate the effect of postoperative parenteral nutrition, an experimental study have been performed. Forty eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups; Group I (normally noumished) and Group II (protein depleted). In the latter group, rats were fed with protein free diet for 6 weeks before operation. All rats were subjected to the ileo-ileostomy, then were infused for 6 days with different solutions; 5% dextrose (=Group A or N on-IVH Group) and 21% glucose 4% amino acidsm ixture( =Group B or IVH Group). The same amounts of electrolytes were added in both solutions.
As results, Group 1-B and II-B (IVH Group) showed positive nitrogen balance, less weight loss and better wound healing as compared to Group I- A and II-A (Non-IVH Group). Group II-A showed the lowest level of total protein and the worst wound healing among four groups.
In conclusion, parenteral nutrition with hypertonic glucose and amino acids was found to be effective in postoperative periods as regards protein metabolism and intestinal wound healing, specialy when protein depletion existed preoperatively.
