STUDIES ON SERUM α2-GLOBULIN LEVELS IN CANCER PATIENTS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO DELAYED HYPERSENSITIVITY SKIN TESTS AND PROGNOSIS

Department of Surgery, Tokyo Metropolitan Komagome Hospital

Tadaaki Sakai

Serum α2-globulin levels in 593 cancer patients were studied in terms of relations to the staging of diseases, delayed hypersensitivity skin tests, operative radicality and prognosis of the patients.
1) Significant correlations were observed between the preoperative serum α2-globulin levels and delayed hypersensitivity skin tests (PPD, PHA and DNCB) or T-cell ratio in peripheral blood.
2) Elevation of serum α2-globulin levels was more distinct in esophageal and lung cancer groups and less in breast cancer group. The levels increased progressively with the progression of clinical staging of disease in gastric, colorectal; esophageal and pulmonary cancer groups.
3) Patterns of serum α2-globulin levels which were serially examined before and after operations were stratified in A (A-1 ~4) and B (B-1, 2). Each pattern was correlative to the course of illness and prognosis of each patient. In group A, the levels elevated in the course of illness with unfavorable prognosis of the patients ensued, while in group B the levels remained low with better prognosis.
4) The analysis of pre-and post-operative changes of serurm α2-globulin levels in cancer patients was useful to decide a staging of the cancer, evaluate the radicality of operations and predict prognosis of the patients.
