The purpose of this study is to determine whether lymph follicles in gastric mucosa and submucosa are composed of B cells or not. Studies were carried out on the resected stomach of 50 cases with peptic ulcer and 87 cases with early gastric cancer. The total number of lymph follicules in the small curvature of the HE stained specimens of each case was calculated. The number of lymph follicules per cm was compared with peptic ulcer and early gastric cancer. Lymph follicules decreased with age, but there was no difference between peptic ulcer and early gastric cancer. Rosette fomation test (RFT) using unsensitized erythrocyte (E), sensitized erythrocyte (EA) and complement reacted EA (EAC) was performed on the fresh gastric specimen of 17 cases with peptic ulcer and 16 cases with early gastric cancer. Because of the positive reaction for 19S EAC RFT in the lymph follicles of all specimens, it was comfirmed that the lymph follicles in mucosa and submucosa were composed of the aggregation of B cells. It was impossible to identify whether the lymphocytes scattered in mucosa and submucosa were T cells or not, because all RFT were negative in these lymphocyte
