CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE DIRECTION OF MULTIMODAL MANAGEMENT OF LOCALLY RECURRENT RECTAL CANCER

In the treatment of locally recurrent rectal cancer, it is widely accepted that surgical resection is the only potential measure for cure. Extended surgery is required in most patients; however, local control and survival are unsatisfactory. For further improvement of the outcome, not only surgical techniques but also knowledge and experience of recently developed multimodal treatment are essential. Due to the nature of the disease, it is difficult to obtain clear evidence from randomized, controlled trials, and therefore treatment strategies must depend on the experience at center facilities. In this article, we describe the current status and future prospects of locally recurrent rectal cancer treatment in Japan and Western countries.
