The Committee for COVID-19 Outbreak of the Japanese Surgical Society (JSS) was organized in March 2020 to disseminate the latest knowledge on the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and publish effective measures related to surgical medical care. Although there was little evidence on COVID-19 at that time, particularly in the field of surgery, we have continued to publish basic policies on surgical medical care in Japan by gathering information from around the world. The Committee for COVID-19 Outbreak of the JSS has also played a central role in issuing public proposals by the Japanese Medical Science Federation. As the outbreak of unknown infectious diseases excluding COVID-19 could occur, we must build up a strong surgical medical system in Japan which will be available for future national emergencies.
