General contribution
DEVELOPMENT OF X-RAY EQUIPMENT WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR THE PREVENTION OF RETAINED SURGICAL ITEMS
In 2023, the AI(Artificial Intelligence)-equipped X-ray system co-developed with FUJIFILM cooperation, was launched. This system automatically highlights suspected foreign objects in X-rays. The development was prompted by a gauze retention incident during surgery in 2018. Despite counting the gauze correctly, it was missed in the postoperative X-ray due to overlap with an aortic stent graft. Recognizing the need for AI-assisted foreign object detection, a collaboration with radiologists, technicians, and FUJIFILM cooperation was initiated. Thousands of X-ray and phantom images were created for AI training. The prototype was completed and published in JACS. After clinical trials, the system was commercialized and is now used nationwide. This project significantly contributes to preventing medical accidents and underscores the role of academia in improving patient safety.
