WORKSTYLE REFORM FOR FEMALE SURGEONS

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Ohyama Memorial Hospital, Nishiwaki, Japan

Wakako Fukuda

Workstyle reform for physicians started in April 2024, introducing maximum limits on their working hours. In Japan, medical services have relied on the self-sacrifice of physicians. Surgeons often work long, irregular hours, which can impact work–life balance. The percentage of female physicians in Japan has been increasing, and more women are choosing to go into surgical specialties. However, female surgeons often stop working or drop to part-time work after having children. Women often face work–life conflicts because household chores and taking care of family and children remains “women’s work” in Japan. We must realize that the essence of workstyle reform aims to improve productivity. Each of us are in different stages of life and have different needs for how we work. A good working environment that offers a high degree of flexibility, opportunities for improving surgical skills and medical knowledge, and fair employment is necessary for both female and male physicians.
