Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Fukuoka Children’s Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan

Toshihide Nakano

The Recommendation for the Consolidation of Facilities Performing Surgery for Congenital Heart Disease (Establishment of a Regional Base) explains the need to train the next generation of medical professionals to continuously provide safe, high-quality surgical care for congenital heart disease. However, to date there has been no training system established for pediatric cardiovascular surgeons in Japan. In light of this, the Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery has created and begun operating the Lifelong Training Program for Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeons, which aims to efficiently and reliably train the next generation of pediatric cardiovascular surgeons under the leadership of the society. This article provides an overview of this training program.
