TRAINING OF PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SURGEONS: THE VIEWPOINT OF PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGISTS

Tokyo Metropolitan Children’s Medical Center, Fuchu, Japan

Hiroyuki Yamagishi

The pediatric cardiologist system is operated by the Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery as a subspecialty based on pediatric specialists. The mission of the society is to train physicians who can treat children with heart disease, and currently there are at least three specialists in every prefecture, contributing greatly to regional medical care. The training of pediatric cardiac surgeons is inextricably linked to the training of pediatric cardiologists. As the surgical treatment of congenital heart disease has made great advances, and the numbers of surgical cases of complex cardiac diseases and cases of cardiac catheterization and treatment have increased, the training of pediatric cardiac surgeons needs to be promoted simultaneously with the training of pediatric cardiologists.
