GYNECOLOGICAL AND UROLOGICAL DISORDERS UNDERLYING ACUTE ABDOMEN IN CHILDREN

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Ibaraki Children’s Hospital, Mito, Japan

Among gynecological and urological disorders that cause acute abdomen in children, ovarian tumor pedicle torsion, ectopic pregnancy, and testicular torsion require emergency surgery. Because those conditions can lead to loss of genital function and be life-threatening to patients, they must be considered during differential diagnosis, with appropriately timed consultations among pediatric surgeons, gynecologists, and urologists. Other causes of acute abdomen in pediatric patients are rupture of an ovarian mass, ovarian hemorrhage, menstrual molimen (hematocolpos, hematometra), pelvic inflammatory disease, urinary tract obstruction, urinary tract infection, and rupture or hemorrhage of a renal tumor. If a rare disease is suspected during a differential diagnostic examination, various imaging modalities assist in making the correct diagnosis and selecting the proper treatment.
