THE JAPAN PANCREATIC CANCER REGISTRY
The Japan Pancreatic Cancer Registry (JPCR) was established by the Japan Pancreas Society in 1981 as a nationwide database on pancreatic cancer. The JPCR database includes approximately 50,000 pancreatic tumor cases. On the other hand, the JPCR implemented the National Clinical Database (NCD) of Japan in 2012, and dual registration combined with conventional registration was provisionally performed. Similarities and differences between the conventional database and NCD database of the JPCR were examined using data on pancreatic cancer cases registered between 2012 and 2013. Although the NCD database contained few nonsurgical cases compared with the conventional database, no differences between the NCD and conventional databases were found in operative procedures, stage, and residual tumor status. Thus, the JPCR switched to NCD registration from 2016. Since the input rate of prognostic information in NCD registration was about 20%, we performed the first nationwide prognostic survey in 2017. Consequently, the input rate of the prognostic information improved to greater than 80%. In survival analysis of approximately 13,000 cases with resection of pancreatic cancer registered in the NCD JPCR between 2012 and 2015, the 5-year survival rate was 30.6%. Therefore, the prognosis of pancreatic cancer after resection is improving.
