DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARDIZED EVALUATION METRICS FOR OFF-THE-JOB TRAINING
Because of the increased number of high-risk patients, the introduction of technically demanding, minimally invasive surgery, and patient-safety issues, current surgical residents’ education requires a more structured training system. Although simulation-based training in cardiovascular surgery has become a topic of interest, successful Off-the-job training (Off-JT) depends heavily on the development of reliable checklists to measure various aspects of surgical techniques using such modalities. In order to establish standardized evaluation metrics for Off-JT, we found that extensive discussion based on video reviews is the most effective in maximizing interrater reliability. The utilization of objective evaluation checklists associated with briefing, debriefing, and appropriate feedback from faculty members is vital for providing the best quality of Off-JT. The dedication and commitment of trainers in Off-JT should inspire residents to become established surgeons. Developing excellent mentor-mentee relationships and observing residents’ progress are undoubtedly the most rewarding parts of being a cardiovascular surgery faculty member.
