ROLE OF THE JAPAN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY DATABASE

Mitsui Memorial Hospital, Tokyo, Japan

Shinichi Takamoto

In order to evaluate improvement in the quality of medical care, monitoring outcomes is important and databases are appropriate sources of information. The Japan Cardiovascular Surgery Database (JCVSD) was established in 2000;in 2012 almost all cases in all institutions were registered because the Japanese board system was merged with the JCVSD. Accurate data entry in the JCVSD is critical, and improvement in accuracy was considered by the Site Visit Committee. Special site visits to healthcare institutions with problems in outcome data were carried out in 2013 and 2015 without disclosure of their names. Subsequently, a conference was held on how to improve surgical care, and reports were sent to the department chiefs of the relevant institutions. In 2016, a web conference covering approximately 40 healthcare institutions was initiated to improve efficiency. Almost all of the healthcare institutions that had received special site visits 2 years previously had improved their operative outcomes. In September 2017, reports on data analyzed in 2013 and 2014 in all areas included in the JCVSD were published, which is expected to support improvement in the quality of cardiovascular surgical care in Japan.
