In the last decade, the therapeutic strategy for patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) changed markedly after endovascular treatment as well as a surgical approach was introduced. In particular, endovascular treatment of iliac occlusive disease is an established treatment modality, although the treatment of infrainguinal lesions remains controversial. The Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) II document of 2007 recommended endovascular treatment in patients with TASC II types A and B lesions and surgical bypass in patients with TASC II types C and D lesions. In this paper, we describe the procedure for and outcome of surgical bypass in PAD patients with infrainguinal occlusive disease compared with those of endovascular treatment.
