EFFORTS TO INCREASE GASTROENTEROLOGICAL SURGEONS IN OUR DEPARTMENT

Department of Surgery, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan

Takehito Yamamoto, Koya Hida, Keiko Kasahara, Kazutaka Obama

According to a report by the Japan Society of Gastroenterological Surgery, the number of gastroenterological surgeons is declining more sharply than in other surgical fields. In response, our department actively recruits future surgeons by enhancing clinical clerkships, offering hands-on workshops with surgical tools and robotic simulators, and engaging junior high school and high school students through hospital tours. These efforts not only boost student interest but also energize teaching surgeons. Furthermore, social media are used to promote these initiatives and increase outreach. However, sustaining these activities poses challenges, requiring support from professional societies and administrative collaboration.
