In recent years, there has been growing interest in transitions in pediatric chronic diseases, and much discussion has arisen regarding clinical practice. The number of pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (pediatric IBD) that develops in childhood has been increasing in Japan to a level similar to that in Europe and the USA, and there is a growing need to support the transition to adulthood. The Research Group on Intractable Inflammatory Bowel Disease reported a “Consensus Statement on Transition Support for Pediatric Patients with Childhood-Onset IBD” jointly by pediatricians and adult physicians, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and information provision. It is necessary for the medical community to develop a support system to ensure a smooth transition to adulthood for pediatric IBD patients during the period of their life with the disease.
