TRANSITION FOR PATIENTS WITH INTESTINAL FAILURE

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Japanese Red Cross Medical Center, Tokyo, Japan

Kazuko Obana

Intestinal failure is the condition of the deficiency of water, nutrients, and electrolytes due to impaired absorption from the gut, and it includes short bowel syndrome and the allied disorder of Hirschsprung’s disease. Patients with intestinal failure often need adequate nutritional support with total parenteral nutrition and gastrointestinal decompression in the management of these complications. Transitional care for patients with intestinal failure requires continued appropriate medical treatment based on a medical viewpoint and the personal situation, rather than simply transfer to the adult clinical department.
