TRENDS IN BREAST SURGERY

Department of Breast Surgery, Fujita Health University, Toyoake, Japan

In 1987, more modified mastectomies (total mastectomies) were performed in breast cancer patients than standard mastectomies in Japan for the first time. Since then, the procedure, along with partial mastectomy, has been performed as the standard surgery for breast cancer patients. At present, skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomies are performed under public health insurance in Japan. However, they are only available at a limited number of institutions where immediate breast reconstruction can be performed at the time of breast cancer surgery. Surgical treatment of breast cancer with high cure rates and good cosmetic results is necessary. Therefore, the two major surgical societies in the field, the Japanese Breast Cancer Society and Japan Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Society, should introduce and establish adequate surgical approaches as soon as possible.
