Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a mechanical circulatory/respiratory support system consisting of a membrane oxygenator and a centrifugal blood pump. The development of long-term durable, safe, as well as effective ECMO systems has been required, and various innovations have been incorporated in ECMO devices including membrane oxygenators, centrifugal blood pumps, and antithrombogenic coating material to produce integrated systems aiming at long-term clinical ECMO application. In the Department of Artificial Organs, National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, Research Institute, an innovative and long-term durable ECMO system has been developed with a long-term durable membrane oxygenator (BIOCUBE), centrifugal blood pump (BIOFLOAT NCVC), and T-NCVC coating applied to the surface of the system in contact with the blood. A clinical trial of the use of this new ECMO system was initiated in 2020.
