CURRENT STATUS OF OFF-THE-JOB TRAINING IN THORACIC SURGERY

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan

Jun Nakajima

In the field of thoracic surgery, young surgeons who are aiming to become board certified need more training, because the techniques of thoracic surgery have become more difficult and complicated along with the evolution of thoracoscopy. Thus Off-the-job training (Off-JT) through dry labs, tissue labs using swine heart-lung block, or in vivo surgical simulation on anesthetized swine are important for young surgical residents. The Japan Association for Chest Surgery conducts technological seminars on thoracoscopic surgery 4 times yearly. Many teaching hospitals have their own Off-JT programs on thoracic surgery for trainees using animal lab facilities. During Off-JT sessions, trainees learn basic techniques of thoracic surgery, i.e., thoracotomy, thoracoscopic examination, or lobectomy. Moreover, Off-JT gives them opportunities for troubleshooting including during massive bleeding from the pulmonary artery. Off-JT also includes rare/difficult techniques and procedures of thoracic surgery, such as living-donor lung transplantation, for qualified thoracic surgeons and medical staff.
