Currently, pneumonia is divided into two categories : community-acquired pneumonia and hospital-acquired pneumonia. Postoperative pneumonia is included in the hospital-acquired category. In particular, ventilatorassociated pneumonia occurs frequently in surgical units, and the aspiration of intrapharyngeal fluid causes this type of infection. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia also occurs in patients with advanced lung carcinoma, poor performance status, and impaired pulmonary function.
Empiric therapy plays an important role in postoperative patients with severe pulmonary infection.
