Total artificial hearts have been used as bridging devices before cardiac transplantation. The donor heart shortage is still a major problem, and the advent of a totally implantable artificial heart system is eagerly awaited. The results of animal experiments have improved in the USA and Japan, and clinical application of the AbioCor artificial heart system has been initiated in the USA. The initial results were successful, and there is now a long-term survivor.
