Laparoscopic-assisted colectomy is considered to be a less invasive technique, and patients experience less pain and more rapid postoperative recovery. This operation has been indicated for large sessile adenomas or for early invasive carcinomas in Japan. The indications for this procedure in more advanced colorectal carclnomas ls controversial. However, based on our experience with 130 cases, laparoscopic-assisted colectomy can be as curative as open colectomy provided that the patients are properly selected. In this review, the technical difficulties of this procedure are also discussed.
