A 67-year-old man with liver cirrhosis and an icteric-type hepatoma involving the left main portal vein underwent left hepatic lobectomy after percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage. Surgery was successful because of effective biliary drainage and meticulous assessment of liver function tests, including 99m TC-galactosyl human serum albumin scintiphotography.
