IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF RAT EMBRYONIC ABDOMINAL WALL FORMATION
The embryogenesis of large omphalocele is still open to debate. This study was done to clarify the development of the abdominal wall of rat embryos (12-15 days postconception) in view of epithelial cell proliferation using monoclonal antiserum against proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). The proliferation rate of the epithelial cells remained at a higher level in the median region of both the epi-and hypogastric wall. The PCNA-positive cell distribution pattern was different in the thoracic and the epigastric wall. These findings indicate that the epithelial cells of the abdominal wall are supplied from the median epi-and hypogastric region and the formation process of the abdominal wall is different from that of the thoracic wall.
