Present status and problems to be solved in graduate medical education for surgeons in Japan were described. To make graduate medical enducation be effective and vaild. the author proposed to establish a agency like the Accreditaion Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in the United States, which gathers and provides informations of characteritics of each programs and evaluates them.
