BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON HEALING PROCESS OF SYNTHETIC VASCULAR GRAFTS
In this paper the author reports the results of biochemical studies, which were composed of analyses of mucopolysaccharides, on healing process of synthetic vascular grafts comparing with their histological findings.
The following results were obtained :
1. Histologically, subcutaneously imbedded double velour knitted Dacron which demonstrated the most favorable healing in the group of commercially available synthetic grafts, showed the almost complete healing about two years after implantation. However, biochemical studies revealed sustaining of the inflammatory response around all of the subcutaneous implants in the same period of observation.
2. The content and components of mucopolysaccharides in the canine abdominal aortic grafts were quite different from those of the subcutaneous implants. The content of mucopolysaccharides and the ratio of chondroitin sulfate to dermatan sulfate were higher, and the negligible amount of hyaluronic acid was found in the former.
3. The composition of mucopolysaccharides in Dacron reinforced autogenous tissue tubes implanted in the canine abdominal aorta has become very similar to those of the host abdominal aortic wall several months after grafting.
4. From the clinical experience of the femoro-popliteal bypass grafting using Dacron reinforced autogenous tissue tubes, its poor results were considered mainly due to incomplete maturity of the grafts at the time of bypass grafting as well as insufficient durability of the reinforcing materials.
