To know whether serum SC is a valuable marker substance for diagnosis of cancer patients, serum levels of secretory component (SC) were determined in patients with various carcinomas or nonneoplastic diseases, and in healthy control by means of a sensitive enzyme immunoassay system. The levels in healthy individuals (n=48) were 67.3±19.9ng/ml. Those in patients with non-neoplastic diseases were 114.3±46.4ng/ml and those in patients with carcinomas ranged widely from 47 to 560ng/ml (176.6±112.2ng/ml). These results indicate that the measurement of serum SC may provide a valuable diagnostic test for the routine screening and subsequent therapeutic monitoring of carcinomas.
