Thyroid chromolymphography using chlorophyll and Lipiodol UF was applied to patients with carcinoma of the thyroid and its clinical value of predicting lymph node metastasis during operation was investigated, and the following results were obtained ;
(1) Metastasis was more often disclosed in the colored nodes in over-all patients with a statistically significant difference (x2= 18.94). This was also true in patients with papillary or follicular carcinoma, and in patients of T2 or T3 staging. (2) As to the localization of the lymph nodes, metastasis in colored. nodes was more frequent in the lower internal jugular region (x2= 4.27). (3) As to the relations between the staining of the nodes and macroscopically or histologically judged metastasis, colored nodes were more easily judged as metastasis-positive both during operation and by histological examination.
These data suggest that chlorophyll can be more easily taken up by the metastasis-positive lymph nodes, and also metastasis is more frequently found in the colored nodes, and that the risk to leave metastasis-positive nodes in situ can be minimized by dissecting these colored nodes.
