Postoperative changes of non-specific cell-mediated immunity were studied in 82 patients with gastric cancer and 17 patients with benign gastric diseases.
1) Among parameters studied preoperatively, lymphocyte count, PHA lymphocyte response, and PPD skin test were significantly depressed in the patients with advanced or recurrent carcinoma. Difference of corrected T-cel% in lymphocytes was not found between normal adults and the patients with benign gastric disease or gastric cancer.
2) Lymphocyte count, PHA lymphocyte response, neuraminidase-treated SRBC rosette formation cell%, T-cell count, PPD and PHA skin tests were markedly depressed at 2 weeks after the operation and revovered to the preoperative value by two months after the operation in all the patients, regardless nature of diseases, or extension of tumor. Neither postoperative chemotherapy, nor tumor reduction affected these changes.
3) In the long-term observation, however, depression of lymphocyte count, PHA lymphocyte response, and neuraminidase-treated SRBC rosette formation cell% reflected recurrence or exacervation of tumor. Depression of neuraminidase-treated SRBC rosette formation cell% was particularly useful in precognition of recurrence or exacerbation of tumor.
