ANOMALOUS CONNECTION OF VENA CAVA IN CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Mie University School of Medicine

Tsutomu Ohi

Since the introduction of angiocardiography, abnormalities of the venous system have been reported with increasing frequency. We have experienced these anomalies in twenty four cases with congenital heart disease. Anomalies of inferior vena cava were seen in fourteen cases out of them. These anomalies of inferior vena cava by themselves produce no symptom. However, they are associated in almost all instances with cardiac lesion that may produce symptoms and be amenable to correction by surgery. In most of our cases, anomalous inferior vena cava was associated with complex anomaly of the heart with cyanosis. Therefore, it was stressed that preoperative knowledge of this anomalies was great importance when cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass was conternplated.
