It has been quite important to diagnose pancreatic cancer in the early stages. The ultrasonic scanning has the greatest value in visualizing soft tissues with non-invasive technique. Comparing with other organs, however, pancreas has been considered as a difficult organ to identify with ultrasound. One autopsy and one thousand and fifty four healthy cases have been analyzed for the detection of pancreas with ultrasound. And fifty two cases of pancreatic cancer have been analyzed of evaluating the diagnostic value of ultrasound. The following results have been obtained.
1) The vessels surrounding the pancreas are very important indexes in detecting the pancreas on the echotomogram.
2) The following findings were very important indexes to detect pancreatic cancer on the ecbotomogram: (i) Localized enlargement of the pancreas, (ii) Irregular margin of tumor images, (iii) Irregular internal echo of tumor images, (iv) Enlargement of the gallbladder, (v) Abnormal deformation of vascular images surrounding the pancreas.
3) The detection of pancreatic cancer with ultrasound has been possible in forty five cases (86.5%).
