The author studied on the movement of the ileocecal part of the intestine particularly during its contents are transported, on cat and human being by means of X-ray and electrical studies.
The results are as follows :
1) Functionally, the cecum will be devided into the true cecum and cecal colon, though Keith and Hirsch also devided it in same way anatomically.
2) When the cecum is empty, the contents are transported into the cecum throgh the ileocecal valve by the tonic contractions which appear suddenly and repeatedly in the terminal ileum filled with contents. First, the contents are filled in the cecal colon, and then in the true cecum. After that, contraction different from peristaltic wave is caused from the blind end of the cecum, and it passes through over the cecal colon and the cecocolic sphincter. Thus, the contents are transported to the ascending colon which has carried down the ontents and are empty already,
3) At this time, the movement of the end of terminal iieum directed to the opening of ileocecal valve is quit different from the other part of the terminal ileum. It contracts at the same time with the contraction of the cecal colon and prevents the regurgitation of the contents from the cecum into the ileum.
4) IIeocecal valve does not concern actively with the transportation of the contents.
5) The appearance of the movement in the ileocecal region is closely related to whether empty or not in this region and to the repeated elevation of intraluminal pressure of the duodenal cap.
