STUDIES OF EARLY STAGE ORAL FEEDINGS AFTER GASTRECTOMY

In the clinical investigations, comparison of nutrition, digestion and metabolic effects was performed in the 3 groups in early stage after gastrectomy, 1st group was supplied with oral feedings negatively, 2nd group was supplied with usual hospital diets in early stage after gastrectomy and 3rd group was prepared special diets containing high protein and high calorie in early postoperative stage.
The results were as follows :
1) Animal experiments revealed that in the early stage well feeded group there were an increase of resolvable tissue protein, a decrease of edema and an increase of mechanical strength at the region of the anastomosis. These facts were also confirmed by the histological observations.
Early stage oral feedings were not dangerous in the animal experiments.
2) In the clinical investigations results of the usual diets group were not satisfactory, but the well feeded group carried out a better balance of nitrogen, potassium, water and calorie than the former in the early stage after gastrectomy.
The movement of bowels was improved by early stage oral feedings, and protein absorption in high protein diet group was better than that in low group and fat absorption was also. Protein, fat and carbohydrate were absorbed relatively well in postoperative diarrhea. Haemorrhage in the digestive canal had som influence on the protein absorption. There were some difference of postoperative metabolism between stomach cancer and stomach ulcer, also female and male.
It was concluded that the patients after gastrectomy should be upplied with the diets containing high calorie and high protein from the early postoperative stage.
