CURRENT STATUS OF AND FUTURE OUTLOOK FOR WORKSTYLE REFORM IN THE MEDICAL SECTOR IN JAPAN
In April 2024, a cap on overtime work for physicians went into effect as part of workstyle reform. In order to maintain the future medical care system, it is important to create an environment in which physicians can continue to work in good health, not only for themselves but also to ensure the quality and safety of medical care provided to patients. This paper analyzes the current impact of workstyle reform from various angles based on data such as the percentage of physicians who work overtime and on holidays for more than 1,860 hours per year, the trend in the number of physicians by medical department, the impact of physicians’ workstyle reform on regional medical care, etc. Three main challenges are discussed: 1) fair evaluation of physicians by making working hours visible; 2) the increased burden of overtime pay on hospital management; and 3) the efficiency of human resource development. These are discussed from the perspective of “branding” with the aim of further improving the contributions of the Japanese Surgical Society after workstyle reform.
