TOWARD A REGIONAL CENTER OF PEDIATRIC CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY: ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY, OKAYAMA UNIVERSITY

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan

Shingo Kasahara

The establishment of a regional center for pediatric cardiovascular surgery is ongoing. The current educational system is not perfect for resolving many problems in the training system, especially for young pediatric cardiac surgeons. The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Okayama University, emphasizes not only medical specialties but also training academic surgeons who will lead the future. For these reasons, we first provide the opportunity for training in general surgery to provide basic general surgery skills. Subsequent specialty training requires active participation in training in adult cardiac and vascular surgery. This is because pediatric cardiac surgeons may not be adequately trained without knowledge and experience in adult cardiac and vascular surgery. We believe that through the acquisition of surgical skills as well as basic research in graduate school, students will be aware of the need for academic surgeons to continue constant development. This is what we aim for as a team and work together to achieve in our daily clinical, research, and educational activities.
