CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE VISION OF ACUTE CARE SURGERY IN JAPAN

Chair, Japanese Society for Acute Care Surgery, and Director, National Hospital Organization Disaster Medical Center, Tachikawa, Japan

Yasuhiro Otomo

In the field of trauma surgery, a high level of expertise is demanded of surgeons. In the USA, under the principle that “Trauma is a surgical disease,” the American College of Surgeons has played a pivotal role in the development of trauma care systems and the advancement of trauma surgery. Conversely, in Japan, the historical domain of trauma care has primarily been managed by the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine. This led to a situation where surgeons dealing with trauma lacked a dedicated professional society. To address this, we established the Japanese Society for Acute Care Surgery (ACS), certifying surgeons with specific training as certified acute care surgeons to improve trauma care outcomes and contribute to hospital management and financial improvements. Going forward, producing a significant number of capable acute care surgeons and establishing ACS departments in hospitals are seen not only as a means to enhance the level of trauma and emergency surgical care in Japan but also to improve the overall working environment for surgeons. Consequently, this effort will contribute to protecting the lives of the national population. In the field of trauma surgery, a high level of expertise is demanded of surgeons.
