UTILIZATION OF SOCIAL NETWORK SERVICES FOR RESEARCHERS
When researchers utilize social network services (SNS) to disseminate information, it is imperative to select the most suitable SNS platform, taking into account the characteristics of the intended audience. SNS platforms where researcher communities thrive are termed “academic social networks (ASN). ” Internationally recognized ASNs include platforms like ResearchGate. In Japan, the predominant ASN is researchmap, operated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. This platform offers a myriad of features, ranging from fostering researcher interactions to semi-automatic registration of academic achievements. With integrations like the electronic application system for scientific research grants, its user base has been steadily growing. Furthermore, it is essential for researchers to link ASN accounts to their unique international identifiers, the ORCID iD. In recent years, the utilization of crowdfunding to secure research funding has been on the rise, making it indispensable to communicate research objectives broadly using mainstream SNS. Notably, ASNs designed to alleviate researchers’ administrative burdens and promote academic activities are expected to yield even greater benefits as more researchers and institutions adopt them as common platforms.
